Gary Player on Putting

How many times have you looked at your scorecard and said, “if only I had made those short putts!” Those missed putts are often the difference between a good round and a bad round. Here’s a video on putting those short putts from Gary Player via the Golf Academy. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Putting Drill

We all have heard the saying, “drive for show and putt for dough”….how true that is! The short game makes or breaks you every time. I often track my hit fairways and putts during a round of play. My best scoring is when I have putts in the low 30’s or better. Here’s a nice putting drill to help with that part of the game from Michael Breed. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

More Putting Tips

In my last post, I mentioned how terrible this average golfers putting was yesterday. Today I am heading out to play the Fox Fire Red Course here in Pinehurst and will be trying some new putting tips to get that part of my game hopefully under control. Here’s another nice video from the Golf Academy with tips from The Golden Bear via Martin Hall. Happy golfing!

Brad Faxon and the Long Putt

As an average golfer, I get my share of long putts once I reach the green. When I look back on a round and see how many three putts I’ve had, it tells the story for the day. Avoiding the three putts by getting that long putt close will take a lot of strokes off your score. Here’s a nice tip from Brad Faxon on making that long putt or at least getting it close.

Using the Putter Off the Green

Several of my golf buddies in the Pinehurst area use their putter off the green more that I am used to using it. So, I have started using it more for that fringe shot and some pros will tell us average golfers, use the putter when you can…you’ll get closer to the pin most times. Here’s a nice golf lesson on how to make the putter work from the fringe. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

The Mind Factor of Golf

This average golfer has been off the links recently due to bad weather, so as always, it will be tough getting back in sync. We all know how much we can add to our score with those dreaded three putts, so I need to avoid them when I get back out this week. Here’s a lesson from Martin and Holly of the Golf Academy that might help on the green. Happy golfing!

The Short Putt

How many short “gimme” putts have your missed that left you shaking your head? I know this average golfer has had his share. As I’ve posted in the past, sinking more putts is a real key point to dropping an amazing number of strokes off your game. It can be the difference that puts you into the 80’s or keeps you away from 100. Here’s a nice short and piratical video to help with that short putt that we all should be making without the “gimme”.
Happy Golfing from this average golfer!

Thistle Dhu at Pinehurst

Donald Ross on Thistle Dhu

Donald Ross on Thistle Dhu

As I mentioned in an earlier post, here’s a little history about the Thistle Dhu putting course at Pinehurst as it is written on the score card.

In 1895, James Walker Tufts founded Pinehurst Resort. Three short years later he introduced and entirely new and unexpected sport of golf to the resort. In 1919, James Barber, came to Pinehurst and built his home, Thistle Dhu. On the grounds of his home, no doubt inspired by his surroundings, he built America’s first miniature golf course. The story goes that upon seeing the completed home and course, he pronounced “This’ll Do”. It was later translated into Thistle Dhu and the name stuck. Donald Ross himself is pictured playing the course on front of this scorecard. The name returns nearly a century later near it’s inspiration and rightful home at Pinehurst.

Thistle Dhu at Pinehurst pays homage to the famed Himalayas putting course near the Old Course in St. Andrews, home to the St. Andrews Ladie’s Putting Club since 1867.

I had fun playing Thistle Dhu and you should give it a try when in Pinehurst. Happy Golfing from this average golfer!

Putting Practice Tip

I’ve talked a lot about my putting, good and bad so when I saw this link, I wanted to share it. As an average typical golfer, I usually drop my practice putting balls as far away from the cup and work up to it…well this takes a different look at how to work on the practice green. Happy Golfing!
