Putt Like Gary Player

We are blessed with many great golf courses here in the Pinehurst, N.C. Area. Today the challenge was at one of my favorite courses, Hyland Golf Club in Southern Pines. The course is in great shape and the greens are fast. The slope on this course is 141 from the blues, 133 white and 124 from the gold. So, as you can see, the course is a tough one, but really well maintained and the owners are great and appreciate the golfers who play here. Today my issues were totally with my putting. I had a difficult time getting the speed down, so I need to spend some time on the putting green. Here’s a nice video from the Golf Academy with some putting techniques used by Gary Player. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Stop Slicing Your Putts

One of the things that I have learned to use my scorecard for is keeping track of my putts. I am always amazed to look back after each nine and total my putts and see just how many strokes are won or lost on the putting green! If you don’t track your putts I would recommend that you give it a try and you will have your eyes opened. The short game, especially on the green, is where we win or lose the battle most times. If I have 18 or less putts for nine I know that I’m okay, but not great. Over 18 and my score is really climbing. When I exceed the 18 putts per nine, I know that my stroke is poor and more practice is needed. Here’s an interesting putting drill to try! Happy golfing from this average golfer.

Four Keys To Reading Greens

We all know that the best way to lower our golf scores is with the short game around and on the the green. When I play a round of golf, in addition to my score, I track fairways hit and the number of putts on each hole. Many times at the end of the round, I look at the putts and am sometimes shocked as to how many strokes I lost on the green! You can really open your eyes on score when you analyze your putts for the round. So, with that said, improvement on the green will make a huge difference at the end of the day. Here’s a video I like from the Golf Academy talking about the four keys to reading greens. This average golfer needs to spend more time reading the greens so this is a good reminder to do so. Happy golfing!

Swing The Putter Like Crenshaw

Wow, I should have stayed in Pinehurst for another month! The weather in Pennsylvania has caused this average golfer to cancel a round on the links the last two days and it doesn’t look like it will be any better very soon. So, it’s back to the indoor practice drills once again. You can never get enough practice on the short game, especially putting, so here is a nice putter swing drill from the Golf Academy to help your putting skills. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Square the Putter Face Drill

This average golfer made the trip north to Pennsylvania from beautiful Pinehurst, North Carolina. It was Spring in Pinehurst and Spring has barelyy shown its face here in Pennsylvania! Although the the courses are open and ready for play here, today is cool with lots of rain so there will be no northern golf today. Instead, it’s off to get some clubs regripped and maybe some indoor practice. There’s nothing better to practice than putting, so here’s a little drill on keeping the putter face square at impact. I’ll be back in Pinehurst in June and in the meantime, I’ll be playing some rounds in the North…Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Putting Drill for Everyone

Everyone needs to practice their putting and here’s a nice putting drill from the Golf Academy. After most rounds, I usually have to admit that I don’t practice putting nearly as much as I should. Hitting the putting green for a few minutes before playing just isn’t enough, you need to dedicate specific time just to that part of your game. This average golfer needs to practice what I preach. It’s one of my goals for the year. Happy golfing!

The Key To Lag Putting

When you are keeping your score while playing a round, write down the number of putts for each hole. If you are off the green, but use your putter to approach, do not count that as a putt. Only count putts that are actually started on the green. Hopefully there won’t be any three putts recorded, but in my game there usually are! I often realize that instead of shooting a 92 I could have been into the 80’s if “I had only made those putts.” I’ll often use that quote when I look over my scorecard. Also, keeping track of those putts will open your eyes to cutting down your score where it counts…on the green. Here’s a video to help get you close to the cup and get rid of those three putts. I’ll be playing at Whispering Woods here in Pinehurst later today and tracking my putts! Happy golfing from this average golfer.

Elevate for Easier Short Putts

I’m going to enjoy the warm weather here in Pinehurst with a trip out to the Foxfire courses today. They have 36 holes with the Grey and Red Fox courses. Today we will be playing the Red Course. Improving my score has to start on the putting green and here’s a video with another short putt drill that might help sink those putts. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Short Putt Drill

Wow, did this average golfer speak too soon about the weather improving here in Pinehurst! It really looks like this week and next will not be good golfing here. It had been by far the worst winter golf season I have experienced. I feel for those that are here with reservations trying to get a jump on their game. March promises to be much better. Meanwhile, here’s another tip from The Golf Academy to keep you in the spirit. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

The PGA’s 8 Inch Cup

This past Thursday, I had a chance to be part of a test the PGA is doing on the possibility of changing the cup size from the now 4 inch to possibly 8 inches! We were playing at the Sanford Golf Club in Sanford, North Carolina. To run the test, they had two flags on each hole, one 4 inch and one 8 inch. It was really a weird experience. When you hit to the green, you had the choice to play to either cup. The 8 inch cup seems huge, and it is….double the current size. My conclusion is that it will really dumb down the game to be frank. I believe that it will basically eliminate the skill associated with putting and it just seems way out of line with the game of golf. It is only appealing when you are having a bad day putting and putting to the cup looks like putting to a bucket! Time will tell, but right now, this average golfer hopes the PGA will stick to the traditional cup and make the bad putters get better at what they do.
