We are blessed with many great golf courses here in the Pinehurst, N.C. Area. Today the challenge was at one of my favorite courses, Hyland Golf Club in Southern Pines. The course is in great shape and the greens are fast. The slope on this course is 141 from the blues, 133 white and 124 from the gold. So, as you can see, the course is a tough one, but really well maintained and the owners are great and appreciate the golfers who play here. Today my issues were totally with my putting. I had a difficult time getting the speed down, so I need to spend some time on the putting green. Here’s a nice video from the Golf Academy with some putting techniques used by Gary Player. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

The Motion of the Club Drill
This average golfer just returned from playing one of my favorite courses here in the Pinehurst area, Hyland Golf Club. Hyland isn’t an easy course, as the slope rating is 124 from the gold tees. I usually shoot in the mid 90’s here and today I shot 91 with a triple on a Par 5 due to a poor trap shot. Also, I was struggling with my club motion, that is, nice easy back swing but too fast coming down. As much as I try to prevent this from happening, it seems to be one of the hardest things to remain consistent with. I am always amazed when I do have an easy down swing just how well the ball flys off the club face. The old saying, let the club do the work! If you want the ball to go farther, don’t swing harder, just change to a longer club. I have committed to making this happen on my next outing Thursday at Seven Lakes Club. To prove my point, here is a nice video drill from The Golf Academy addressing this very point. An over due “thanks” for reading my blog. Happy golfing from this average golfer!
Stop Slicing the Ball
It was a spectacular day here in Pinehurst and a super day to play golf. Although this average golfer had a pretty good day, I did run into a few problems off the tee and with my irons as I was developing a slice. Practice and more practice is what it will take and I decided to look up a video and get some help. It’s an interesting drill from the Golf Academy and I hope it will help you get rid of that slice also. We played at the Hyland golf course and because it was so spectacular and beautiful, I wanted to share some photos below. Happy golfing from this average golfer!
The Swing Pause
It looks like Spring is coming here in Pinehurst, as the temps will be into the 70’s today. That means another great day to golf and today it will be at Hyland Golf Club. Before heading out, here’s a nice tip on pausing at the top of your swing. I think I’ll give it a try and see what happens. Happy golfing from this average golfer!
Chipping lesson
This average golfer played on Sunday at one of my favorite courses in the Pinehurst area, Whispering Pines. They have the River course and the Pines course, the latter being the one we played. I had one of the worst rounds of the winter golf season because my short game was terrible, especially the chipping. Before heading out tomorrow morning to play Hyland, I needed to refresh my mind about chipping. Here’s a video from the Golf Academy that I looked at and wanted to share for those average golfers out there struggling with this part of the game, as I am! I’ll let you know if it helps tomorrow…Happy golfing!

Hyland Golf Club
Today’s challenge for this average golfer was the Hyland Golf Club in Southern Pines. The weather was also a bit of a challenge as the temperature reached 50° and we had light rain. The gold tee rating here is 67.0 with a slope of 124, so the difficulty is above average. Yardage is 5894. Rating, slope and yardage from the white tee is 69.5/133/6337 and blue tees are 72.1/141/6823. It can be a challenging course regardless of your skill level. This average golfer from the gold tees had a 50/51 for 101….but it’s the short game that is causing all the score, as I had three three putts on the front and the same on the back! Shave those three putts to just two and I knock six strokes off my score! Also, I only hit five fairways. There is a lesson in those results….spend more time on the putting green! Happy golfing!
