Horizontal Golf Swing Drill

Yesterday I posted a drill using a coat hanger from the Golf Academy and here’s another drill that you can practice indoors or out. If you are able to get to the course for a round of Winter/Spring golf or if you are still a little snowbound, there’s always time to work on your game. I like this drill because it feels good to get the arms moving and feel the club head speed as it builds up. I’ll be back in Pinehurst next week to give more information on some courses I will be playing there before heading North for awhile. In the meantime, Happy Golfing from this average golfer!

Coat Hanger Drill

Not everyone is lucky enough to be playing golf in March, depending on where you live. Regardless, you can still practice many parts of the game on or off the links. I am constantly looking for fun drills to help me play better and here is one that I found to be helpful and hopefully you will also. Happy golfing from this average golfer.

Swing With Power Like Arnold Palmer

I’ll be heading off to Myrtle Beach tomorrow, but there won’t be any golf in the trip. However, that doesn’t mean I can’t practice while I am away from the links in Pinehurst. I was always fascinated and followed Arnold Palmer over the years and looked at his swing as awkward. However, many people forget that he was one of the great distance drivers of his time. Here’s a great video from the Golf Academy the breaks down his swing and shows you how to get that Palmer power! Happy golfing from this average golfer.

Lose the T-Rex Arms

I’ve written here many times that I am an average golfer. I will never be a PGA pro but I still want to improve enough to think like a pro and have the confidence in my game to keep my scores improving. So, I am always looking for drills and lessons to help me play better. Here’s one drill to practice getting rid of those T-Rex arms that we all have had before. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Box Before Ball Drill

Practice makes perfect and being an average golfer, I am always looking for lessons and drills to improve my game. My rotation and swing can always use help so here’s a drill that I liked and wanted to share. Happy golfing!

Golf Psychology of the Yips

I don’t know about you, but this average golfer has talked himself right into a bad shot or hole many times. Recently while playing at Legacy here in the Pinehurst area,  I hit a great drive on a short par four but mentioned to my cart partner that I’d probably blow the second shot….and then proceeded to skull the second shot past the flag and off the back of the green. I’ve also stepped up to the tee of a hole that I have played poorly in the past and said, “I don’t like this hole, I always struggle here.” So, I shouldn’t be surprised when I play it poorly again, after all, I’m mentally defeated before I start! So, if you have been there then you know what I’m talking about. Here’s a video lesson on the psychology of the yips…maybe it will help those of us who get in this trap. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

X Marks the Spot for Lower Body Movement

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from this average golfer. As I head out to play Legecy Links today, I want to try and work on my lower body movement. When that isn’t working, I end up “arm swinging” which leads to some bad shots. It’s a beautiful day for golf in Pinehurst, so here’s a tip from the Golf Academy for that lower body movement. Happy golfing!

Putting Drill for Everyone

Everyone needs to practice their putting and here’s a nice putting drill from the Golf Academy. After most rounds, I usually have to admit that I don’t practice putting nearly as much as I should. Hitting the putting green for a few minutes before playing just isn’t enough, you need to dedicate specific time just to that part of your game. This average golfer needs to practice what I preach. It’s one of my goals for the year. Happy golfing!

Stopping Those Topped Shots

It’s a rainy day here in Pinehurst, so time to work on some fundamentals until tomorrow when the sun will shine and we will be back on the links. From time to time I find myself topping shots or hitting behind them. Here’s a video from the Golf Academy to help correct those situations. Happy golfing from this average golfer.

Getting Rid of the Snap Hook

Yesterday was a beautiful day here in Pinehurst with the temperature reaching 81° and this average golfer played out at the Foxfire course. Foxfire has two 18 hole courses, the Red Fox and the Grey Fox. Having the two courses helps spread out play on busy days and makes for a nice round of golf. Both courses are challenging as the Grey has a slop rating from the white tees of 128 and the Red slope from white is 127. Gold slope is 122 and 123. An average slope rating is 115 so these courses are well above average difficulty. Every time I play, there is a part of my game that comes out as needing improvement. Yesterday, I was hooking some shots, so here’s a video that I took a look at afterwards to see how I can stop the hook today as I head out to the Little River course. Happy golfing!
