Release Like Jack Nicklaus

With all the excitement of the Masters upon us, and watching the hole-in-one that the Golden Bear had during the par three round, I wanted to share this video from the Golf Academy. Here in Pinehurst, one of the finest courses we have and a favorite of mine is the Nicklaus designed Legacy Links. A must play while in Pinehurst. Enjoy the video lesson and relaeas it like the Golden Bear next time you are on the golf course! Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Sound Golf Links Hertford, North Carolina

This average golfer is in beautiful Hertford, North Carolina at the Albemarle Plantation resort. While here I will be playing the Sound Golf Links. My bonus coming here was that I learned that Hertford is the home of former New York Yankees great, Jim “Catfish” Hunter! The course looks like fun, but it’s good that I have a large supply of balls after taking a look around the course last evening. Should be interesting. Before every round, I try to do something new to improve my game. So, here are two nice links. The first is a run down of the Sound Golf Links course and the second is a nice little drill from the Golf Academy on relaxing your arms called the Gravity Drop Drill. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Goosen’s Signature Finish

Having a great swing, including the finish is a thing of beauty in golf. They say that Goosen’s finish is one of the best and here is a video from the Golf Academy that shows that perfect finish. Having a good finish is probably one of the hardest things that I struggle with my in my swing and that is probably true for a lot of amateur golfers. I’m starting the golf week by traveling to Hertford, North Carolina to play a couple of new courses and look forward to telling my readers about them! Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Should You Lift That Lead Heal?

If I’ve heard it once I’ve heard it a hundred times, keep that lead heal on the ground. Now, Martin Hall of the Golf Academy tells us that may not be true for us senior golfers! In this lesson video, he also talks about some pros who do not keep that left heel down and how it aids the swing. After looking at this video and then putting a club in my hands and trying the swing with a little bit of lead foot lift, I was amazed at how much easier my turn seemed to be. Now I’m anxious to give it a try out on the links. This average golfer is traveling out near the northern coast of North Carolina tomorrow and will give you an update on some golfing experiences that we are planning there. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Hit Like Jason Day

Yesterday was a beautiful day here in Pinehurst, North Carolina and it was a super day to play the Foxfire Grey course. This average golfer played better as a result of being more consistent throughout the day. Any time you can be more consistent your game is going to improve without fail. Jason Day has a very consistent swing and here is a Golf Academy video that will talk about that consistency and how to make it work. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Grip Like Arnold Palmer

Yesterday, this average golfer played our Whispering Pines River Course here in the Pinehurst area. After conquering that course yesterday, I am off to the Foxfire Grey Course today. As I have mentioned many times in this blog, before every round I try to focus on one aspect of my game and make an improvement. Yesterday I seemed to be letting the club fly out of my hands a little bit, so today it’s focusing on the proper grip. I came across this video from the Golf Academy which talks about the famous grip of Arnold Palmer. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Hitting the Three Hardest Bunker Shots

This average golfer currently splits his golf time between Pinehurst and the Northeast. I get my winter golf in and head north for a few months as Spring approaches the north before heading back to Pinehurst for some Summer golf and later in the Fall. One of the major differences that I see between the north and south courses is sand bunkers. What I mean is, very few bunkers in the north compared to the courses I play in Pinehurst. A course in Pinehurst that is noted for its bunkers is Talamore for example. If you are going to play in Pinehurst, you really do need to know how to play out of the sand. Not many golfers will spend the time necessary practicing the biker shot and as a result will struggle when they are on a course that is replete with sand. Here’s a great video on how to hit the three toughest bunker lies. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Under Arm Drill for Solid Contact

Despite a freeze warning here in Pinehurst tonight, there’s a lot of golf planned in the next few days. Today it’s off to Knollwood practice range and green, a round of golf on Sunday at a yet to be determined course and then Hyland Golf Club on Tuesday. I always like to go to the range with a specific drill in mind and here’s one from the Golf Academy that I will be trying today. Happy golfing from this average golfer.

Pitching: Chest to Target

I often blog here about the short game because that is where you run up your score or better yet, that is where you shave strokes off your score! When I review a round of golf, the short game is where I made it happen or not. Pitching from 40 or 50 yards out to the pin sometimes becomes my nemesis for the day, so here is a nice video from the Golf Academy to improve those pitches. I’ll be playing Hyland Golf Club in Pinehurst this week so will give you some nice information about the club later on. In the meantime, happy golfing from this average golfer!

Move the Hips Downswing Drill

Like a lot of average golfers, my swing gets in trouble because I don’t downswing properly. Using the hips to start the downswing seems to be one of the hardest drills for me to tackle. I can never get enough tips or instruction when it comes to this part of the game. Here’s a video drill from the Golf Academy to help get that downswing moving properly. Happy golfing from this average golfer!
