Hit The Low Wedge Shot

This average golfer is still being kept away from the links here in the Northeast due to the frigid weather we are experiencing. However, the coming week looks like it might be good for getting out finally! Oh how I am envious of my golfing friends in Pinehurst! In the meantime, all I can do is keep working on some drills to help make up for the lack of time on the course that will make me rusty. Here’s a nice video from The Golf Academy on hitting that low wedge shot to the green. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Swing The Putter Like Crenshaw

Wow, I should have stayed in Pinehurst for another month! The weather in Pennsylvania has caused this average golfer to cancel a round on the links the last two days and it doesn’t look like it will be any better very soon. So, it’s back to the indoor practice drills once again. You can never get enough practice on the short game, especially putting, so here is a nice putter swing drill from the Golf Academy to help your putting skills. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Square the Putter Face Drill

This average golfer made the trip north to Pennsylvania from beautiful Pinehurst, North Carolina. It was Spring in Pinehurst and Spring has barelyy shown its face here in Pennsylvania! Although the the courses are open and ready for play here, today is cool with lots of rain so there will be no northern golf today. Instead, it’s off to get some clubs regripped and maybe some indoor practice. There’s nothing better to practice than putting, so here’s a little drill on keeping the putter face square at impact. I’ll be back in Pinehurst in June and in the meantime, I’ll be playing some rounds in the North…Happy golfing from this average golfer!

7 Lakes Jewel of Pinehurst

Yesterday, this average golfer teed off at 7 Lakes here in the West Pinehurst area. Unfortunately, we had to bag it after 12 holes as the rain was coming too hard. I was still happy to be out there because 7 Lakes is one of the jewels of the area in my opinion. The course recently changed ownership and the new owners are really doing a nice job of attracting golfers. A local special sets rates in the low 30’s most days, lower at certain times and always includes breakfast or lunch including two beverages (beer included). You also earn point towards merchandise in the pro shop. They are remodeling the bar area and installing new furnishings. All of this in addition to a beautiful and well manicured 18 holes of golf! I will be traveling north for a few months of northern golf so will look forward to playing 7 Lakes when I return. In the meantime, here is a  nice look at 7 Lakes and a funny take to make your golfing day. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

The Motion of the Club Drill

This average golfer just returned from playing one of my favorite courses here in the Pinehurst area, Hyland Golf Club. Hyland isn’t an easy course, as the slope rating is 124 from the gold tees. I usually shoot in the mid 90’s here and today I shot 91 with a triple on a Par 5 due to a poor trap shot. Also, I was struggling with my club motion, that is, nice easy back swing but too fast coming down. As much as I try to prevent this from happening, it seems to be one of the hardest things to remain consistent with. I am always amazed when I do have an easy down swing just how well the ball flys off the club face. The old saying, let the club do the work! If you want the ball to go farther, don’t swing harder, just change to a longer club. I have committed to making this happen on my next outing Thursday at Seven Lakes Club. To prove my point, here is a nice video drill from The Golf Academy addressing this very point. An over due  “thanks” for reading my blog. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

The Secret of How To Shape Shots

If the weather holds out here in Pinehurst, this average golfer will be back on the links tomorrow trying to improve his game. As an amateur golfer, one of the things that I struggle with more than anything is how to shape a shot. In other words, how do I make that draw or fade when I need to. It seems that I can make that draw or fade when I am not trying to, but when I really want to make it, it is difficult to do. Here’s a video from the Golf Academy that helps you learn how to shape those shots when you need to do it out on the links. It may also give us a clue as to why we make those shots when we aren’t trying to. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Launch Drive and No Slice

This average golfer takes to the links with a positive attitude each round, but usually I will have a trouble spot somewhere in my game by rounds end. That’s why we practice, analyze and correct our mistakes. Sometimes I’ll ask for help from a golfing partner when I can’t figure out a correction and if that doesn’t work, I’ll research for the next round or practice range. During my lastest round, I started hitting my drive lower than usual and that caused some troubles with up hill tee boxes. I found myself also having this same issue with my fairway metals. So, wanting to find a fix, I researched this video and hopefully it will help me launch those clubs better next time out. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Gary Sheffield Learns About Core Rotation

This average golfer played at one of my favorite courses here in the Pinehurst area yesterday, Foxfire Grey Course. One of the bad habits that I often get into is swinging with my arms and not rotating that core part of my body that needs to give you the power in your swing. This was the case with me yesterday.  When you see the small golfers who can really get distance on their ball, it’s probably because they know how to rotate and use that core power. Here’s a great video from the Golf Academy to help you learn this rotation and impact with the core rotation. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Release Like Jack Nicklaus

With all the excitement of the Masters upon us, and watching the hole-in-one that the Golden Bear had during the par three round, I wanted to share this video from the Golf Academy. Here in Pinehurst, one of the finest courses we have and a favorite of mine is the Nicklaus designed Legacy Links. A must play while in Pinehurst. Enjoy the video lesson and relaeas it like the Golden Bear next time you are on the golf course! Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Cutter Creek Golf Course, Snow Hill, N.C.

Yesterday this average golfer played the Cutter Creek Golf Course in Snow Hill, North Carolina on our way back to Pinehurst from a few days in northeast Carolina. The course is fairly new, starting out as a nine hole course in 2008 and a few years later adding the back nine. It has a slop rating of 124 for seniors which is a challenge. Nice concrete cart paths, manicured fairways and greens make the course a nice play. It is mostly open with little shade on hot days. Overall, it was a nice course, but nothing I would rush back to play. I’ve attached some info on the course if you are ever passing through Snow Hill in the Greenville area. Happy golfing from this average golfer!
