The 40 Yard Pitch Shot

This average golfer is always looking for ways to improve his game when he isn’t out on the links. We all face that “in between” 40 yard pitch shot at some time during our round of golf. Here is a nice video from the Golf Channel that will help your confidence in making that shot. The weather here in Pinehurst is great and I will be writing about some of our many courses we have here as the winter golf season gets into full swing. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Sanford, N.C. Golf Course

Before the recent cold snap here in Pinehurst, North Carolina, this average golfer was able to hit the links at the Sanford Golf Course which is about a 40 minute ride north of Pinehurst. It’s a great little Course to work on refining your game before hitting some of the local Pinehurst courses. Sanford is a public municipal golf course but is well-maintained and has a very friendly pro shop. If you’re over 50, the all year rate is $20. Whenever I mention a golf course price, that includes your cart and green fees. There are three sets of men’s tees, blue coming in at 6304 yards, white at 5901 and gold at 5164. The slope ratings are 130, 122 and 108 so you can see if you play the gold it is well under average and a fun course to work on your game. So, on your way in or out of Pinehurst it’s a good little stop to warm up your game or finalize your play before heading back north. Luckily the cold snap is going to end here in Pinehurst and we will be back on the links in a few days. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Tobacco Road

Winter golf here in Pinehurst has gotten off to a slow start do to some rainy weather. However, this average golfer did manage to play Tobacco Road and as always it was a real doozy. This course is located about 20 minutes north of Pinehurst off of US Route 1. If you do come to Pinehurst to golf, this absolutely is a must on your list of courses to play. It is like no other course in the area and a real fun challenge. On the link below, I have provided a fun flyover of the course, courtesy of the Tobacco Road website. Just click on the “take the tour” button and enjoy a trip around the course. I’ll be talking more about the courses  here in Pinehurst when the rain stops! In the meantime, Happy New Year and happy golfing from this average golfer!

The Sidesaddle Putt

Lately I have been hearing a lot about bringing back the sidesattle putt from various golf sites and I found this video from Pinehurst. Interesting and it might be fun to give it a try next time you are out on a putting green and have some time to kill. I know I’m going to give it a try just to see how it feels if for no other reason. Happy golfing from this average golfer!🏌

Hip Drill for Your Golf Swing

Snow flurries are in the air here in the north, but in a little over a week I plan on being back out on the links in Pinehurst. I’m blessed to be able to spend my winters where I can play golf and prior to getting back out on the course, it’s always nice to find some new drills that will get the game rolling good when I return. Each week, I try and find one thing that will help my game, then practice it so hopefully it will be routine going forward. Here’s an interesting drill from the Golf Channel Academy that helps to keep your hips from moving forward too soon. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Avoiding the Chunk Shot

I love watching golf videos to improve my game while I anxiously await my return to Pinehurst for winter golf. As an average golfer, I dread the chunk shot. How many times have you had that great drive, great second shot near the green thinking you were in line to get that par, only to have that dereaded chunk shot to the flag which then takes you totally out of rhythm for the hole? Well, it has happened to me many more times than I like to remember. Here’s a nice video from the Golf Channel Academy that I found to be very interesting. After seeing this lesson, I will have to rethink which club to use around the green. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Preparing For Winter Golf With Physical Therapy

In an earlier post, I mentioned that I was preparing for winter golf in Pinehurst. To be a little more specific, I developed some shoulder problems in both rotator cuffs which caused tendinitis and calcium deposits. I never felt that the problem was interfering with my golf swing, however I always had pain if I tried to throw overhand such as throwing a baseball. After getting the diagnosis, and starting some physical therapy, I have experienced an amazing recovery. Although it was supplemented with some Cortizone shots to get started, the exercise program has been a tremendous success. I would highly recommend that anyone with any shoulder pain, check out the cause and hopefully it won’t be anything more serious than what some physical therapy could cure. Today, for the first time, I started swinging my golf club and realized that my swing has more flexibility and no pain whatsoever. I was just stubborn about having my shoulders looked at and realize now that I should’ve done it much sooner. With all that said, this average golfer is looking forward to getting back out on the links in Pinehurst and my first tee-time should be the week of Christmas. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Impact And Follow Through

This average golfer may just get out for a round of golf here in the Northeast today! It has been difficult not playing after a full winter season of golf in beautiful Pinehurst, North Carolina. Today will be a day to remove some of the rust after not playing for two weeks. I recently heard a golf instructor mentioning that one of the most common faults of amateur golfers is the follow through. I know that over the years, this has been one of my biggest faults…lack of follow through. My body wants to stop after impact and as most golfers know, that just doesn’t work very well. Here’s a nice lesson from the Golf Academy to help with the all important follow through that you can practice. Happy golfing from this average golfer!
