Winter golf in Pinehurst has been the worst that I can remember in years. Unusually cold temperatures and several snow days have really put a damper on playing recently. Many of the courses have had to cover their greens for several days at a time. Also, we have had to experience frost delays on many days when we did play. As we approach February there is hope for getting back to normal. Ususally by the end of February we have signs of Spring as trees and bulbs start to show signs of blossoms. Sun is forecast this week and temps will improve by Thursday as we look forward to taking on the Beacon Ridge course at Seven Lakes West. I’ll let you know how that goes. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Visit Pinehurst Golf Academy
We are having an absolutely spectacular February here in Pinehurst and one for the books as far as the weather goes. I follow Pinehurst Resort and Golf Club because they have a lot happening throughout the year to talk about. I just had to share this post for their golf academy as it made me laugh and we can all use a good laugh from time to time…happy golfing from this average golfer!

The 40 Yard Pitch Shot
This average golfer is always looking for ways to improve his game when he isn’t out on the links. We all face that “in between” 40 yard pitch shot at some time during our round of golf. Here is a nice video from the Golf Channel that will help your confidence in making that shot. The weather here in Pinehurst is great and I will be writing about some of our many courses we have here as the winter golf season gets into full swing. Happy golfing from this average golfer!
Sanford, N.C. Golf Course

Before the recent cold snap here in Pinehurst, North Carolina, this average golfer was able to hit the links at the Sanford Golf Course which is about a 40 minute ride north of Pinehurst. It’s a great little Course to work on refining your game before hitting some of the local Pinehurst courses. Sanford is a public municipal golf course but is well-maintained and has a very friendly pro shop. If you’re over 50, the all year rate is $20. Whenever I mention a golf course price, that includes your cart and green fees. There are three sets of men’s tees, blue coming in at 6304 yards, white at 5901 and gold at 5164. The slope ratings are 130, 122 and 108 so you can see if you play the gold it is well under average and a fun course to work on your game. So, on your way in or out of Pinehurst it’s a good little stop to warm up your game or finalize your play before heading back north. Luckily the cold snap is going to end here in Pinehurst and we will be back on the links in a few days. Happy golfing from this average golfer!
The Sidesaddle Putt
Lately I have been hearing a lot about bringing back the sidesattle putt from various golf sites and I found this video from Pinehurst. Interesting and it might be fun to give it a try next time you are out on a putting green and have some time to kill. I know I’m going to give it a try just to see how it feels if for no other reason. Happy golfing from this average golfer!🏌

Hip Drill for Your Golf Swing
Snow flurries are in the air here in the north, but in a little over a week I plan on being back out on the links in Pinehurst. I’m blessed to be able to spend my winters where I can play golf and prior to getting back out on the course, it’s always nice to find some new drills that will get the game rolling good when I return. Each week, I try and find one thing that will help my game, then practice it so hopefully it will be routine going forward. Here’s an interesting drill from the Golf Channel Academy that helps to keep your hips from moving forward too soon. Happy golfing from this average golfer!
Avoiding the Chunk Shot
I love watching golf videos to improve my game while I anxiously await my return to Pinehurst for winter golf. As an average golfer, I dread the chunk shot. How many times have you had that great drive, great second shot near the green thinking you were in line to get that par, only to have that dereaded chunk shot to the flag which then takes you totally out of rhythm for the hole? Well, it has happened to me many more times than I like to remember. Here’s a nice video from the Golf Channel Academy that I found to be very interesting. After seeing this lesson, I will have to rethink which club to use around the green. Happy golfing from this average golfer!
