Stop the Shank Shot

I love golf because there is always room for improvement in my game to say the least. Actually, I view it as an adventure when things go wrong and you have to find your way back. For example, I recently went off the rails and started shanking short chips to the green. I just could not seem to stop it as I was mentally challenged to find a solution. Looking over several online lessons, I discovered that I was standing way too close to the ball and was hitting the ball off the hosel rather than the face of the club. After some practice, moving my hands further away from my body, gone was the shank! I want to share this Golf Academy video about the shank, because it approached it a little differently. The most feared shot in golf…as the video mentions. So, if you get the shanks like I do, here’s some relief of mind that it can be fixed. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Help Your Golf Swing With Your Foot Position

Over the years, I have tried many different foot positions when I set up for my golf swing. I’ve tried those positions because of different techniques I’ve heard other people talk about, what I’ve seen and what I’ve read about. The video below from the golf channel is one of the best ones I’ve viewed when it comes to explaining how to position your feet for your swing.  It may not be a fix all, but for me it has worked better than anything I have tried in the past. Hope it helps you too and happy golfing from this average golfer! 🏌️

Replacing Your Garmin Golf GPS

Several years ago I received my first Garmin GPS for golfing as a gift. It was a S1 basic GPS but I used it for many years and  it performed well for my needs.  However, the S1 did have a flaw in that the band and housing were all one piece and you couldn’t replace the band.  After several years of use, the band started to crack near the housing and eventually let in moisture which ruined the GPS and it was no longer functional. At that point I had become used to using it and I headed off to my local sporting goods store to look at purchasing a new Garmin GPS. While I was browsing and looking, I started talking to the sales person and was explaining the reason that I was in search of a new GPS.  He mentioned that before I purchase a new one, maybe I should call Garmin as they tend to stand by their products quite well. Taking his advice, I went back home and indeed called Garmin and explained the situation to them. The sales person was right, they aim to please and want to stand behind their products. My Garmin was seven years old but I had registered it and they had record of my ownership.  After discussing several options, they agreed to replace my current Garmin with an upgraded S6 which was loaded with many more features.  The S-6  would be a refurbished housing with completely new insides and they were willing to give it to me for $75 and it normally retails for over $300.  All I had to do was return my damaged and worn out GPS and they would send me the new one which they did promptly.  I have been using the new GPS for well over a year now and it functions great and the added features are also really super.  So, before you run out and replace that damaged or worn out Garmin you may want to give them a call and have a discussion. I was more than pleased and I will probably always stick with a  Garmin GPS as a result. Happy golfing from this average golfer⛳️🇺🇸

Some of the New PGA Rules for 2019

Each year the PGA puts out a new set of rules for the upcoming year. Below are a few of the new rules that apply around the green. Of these new rules, I find the most interesting are those dealing with not having to remove the flagpole to putt.  It should be interesting to see how golfers decide to take advantage of these new rules.

No more penalty for accidentally moving a ball on the green

You are still penalized, however, if it is “virtually certain” you caused it to move on purpose.

You can putt with the flagstick in

Not only has the penalty for putting to an unattended flag been eliminated, you can go at it without having it removed at all.

You can repair all the damn spike marks your heart desires

As well as repair animal or other damage on the green.

Another penalty removed: touching the line of the putt

However, caddies are not allowed to stand behind or serve as an extension of the line.

Staying Hydrated for Golf

While the Winter and Spring weather has been unusually cool here in Pinehurst, North Carolina, it won’t be long before the heat of the summer is upon us. Staying hydrated in the summer heat while out on the course is extremely important and I learned to hydrate the proper way through a bad experience last summer. I was playing and after 15 holes, I began to sweat profusely, was lightheaded and my heart was beating fast. I struggled through the remaining holes and after the round of golf, realized that I had been extremely dehydrated which could be a dangerous situation to be in. After that episode, I decided it was time to learn how to hydrate properly. After reading some medical advice online about proper hydration, I proceeded to play the next day which was just as hot, but I made it through the round with no profuse sweating, light head or heart rate increase. Here’s what I learned and I use it every time in the summer now and have never had any further issues with dehydration. Depending on what time you are playing, either after breakfast or after lunch, always drink at least one full bottle of water with that breakfast or lunch prior to playing. Once you reach the golf course, drink a half bottle of water before you tee off on the first hole. Then throughout the day, take two to three good swallows of water on each tee box. Since I have been practicing this hydration procedure, I have not had any further issues and follow this procedure religiously in the hot weather. If you have ever been dehydrated on the golf course and have had the symptoms I mentioned, you know how scary it can be. So, stay hydrated and enjoy your summer golf! Southern Pines Golf Club

Today will see a rare visit to the Southern Pines Golf Club for a day of golf. I say a rare visit because for locals here in the Pinehurst area, Southern Pines club has not been fee friendly. However, this year they have added their course to some local discounts and I expect they will get more play from locals as a result. The course is one of a few in the country that is owned by an Elks club. However, my sources tell me that it is currently being managed by another golf facility in the area and may possibly be for sale by the Elks. Years ago when I first started coming to the Pinehurst area, you could play this course for a very low cost if you were a visiting Elk but for whatever reason, that stopped happening much to the disappointment of member Elks. I look forward to today’s round as it always was a very nice course to play. Attached below is a rundown of the course and it’s history. I’ll let you know how the course plays at the end of the day. Slow Mo your Shot

While we wait for the weather to improve here’s something to consider doing when you get back on the links. Slow mo a shot of your swing. I had one of my golfing buddies do this for me recently and it was really fun to watch. I was on the 13th tee of the Whispering Woods course in the Pinehurst area. You can view the video below. So, get your smart phone out, take that swing and have your partner video it. It’s not one of my best shots, just done randomly, and I am sure you can find several faults, but now there is a reason to review that swing and maybe make some improvements. Making golf fun is what it’s all about! Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Winter Golf in Pinehurst

Winter golf in Pinehurst has been the worst that I can remember in years. Unusually cold temperatures and several snow days have really put a damper on playing recently. Many of the courses have had to cover their greens for several days at a time. Also, we have had to experience frost delays on many days when we did play. As we approach February there is hope for getting back to normal. Ususally by the end of February we have signs of Spring as trees and bulbs start to show signs of blossoms. Sun is forecast this week and temps will improve by Thursday as we look forward to taking on the Beacon Ridge course at Seven Lakes West. I’ll let you know how that goes. Happy golfing from this average golfer!

Visit Pinehurst Golf Academy

We are having an absolutely spectacular February here in Pinehurst and one for the books as far as the weather goes. I follow Pinehurst Resort and Golf Club because they have a lot happening throughout the year to talk about. I just had to share this post for their golf academy as it made me laugh and we can all use a good laugh from time to time…happy golfing from this average golfer!
